Azaad Dhol Group was first formed in 2002 with the aim of involving and teaching young people the various aspects of traditional Punjabi folk music, also known as ‘Lok Geet’.Through the success of its work, Azaad Arts was formed as the main body of this organisation in Wolverhampton.
 
Harjit Singh, founder and music tutor of Azaad Dhol Group is also Head of World Music & Percussion for Music Service in Birmingham and also teaches at Wolverhampton Music Service. He has over 30 years of specialist experience in performing, playing and teaching the Tabla, Dholak, Dhol and Harmonium.
 
The Azaad Dhol Group consists of students of various ages, from 8 to 30 years of age, who come from diverse backgrounds across Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Over the last 27 years hundreds of pupils have learnt from Harjit and some have moved on to play at semi-professional levels within the Bhangra Music industry.
 
The style of playing and the method of teaching are based on traditional and classical structures. Pupils learn through both theory and practical Indian teaching styles of the oral tradition. Exams can now be taken in Indian music throughout the year with PRSSV. A new Dhol book with western notation has been implemented this year with Keda Music composed and arranged by Kuljit Bhamra.
 
Azaad Dhol Group have performed at festivals and cultural events all over the country promoting traditional Punjabi Folk Music.
